This should of been typical Oscar bait when it was released earlier this year. But when the Oscars came around, Rabbit hole left with nothing. It's a shame that people may miss out on this film and instead watch the eventual winners like Black Swan, The Kings Speech and The fighter. Without a doubt all those films are great but you should also take the time to watch Rabbit Hole as you'll be missing out on a great piece of film. Admittedly one that is very depressing. Movie stars Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart play a married couple who have lost their only son when he was run over by a young man (Miles Teller). The film shows us the aftermath of the accident and what affect it has on their lives.
Kidman and Eckhart play the perfect couple. Both beautiful, have a gorgeous home but both struggle to find new meaning in their lives. They both try group therapy which is more a source of irritation and awkwardness then comfort. In fact nothing seems to be working. They both try and get on with their lives. They still argue, hang out with friends and even laugh. In some cases the film can be quite funny. A perfect example would be during the group session Eckhart's Howie and a single mom (Sandra oh) decide to smoke some weed before the session starts. Whilst sitting in the session they both have weird expressions on their faces and laugh inappropriately when another couple are telling their story. Howie doesn't look the type of person who would do this kind of thing. But it's his release as he tries to move on from the past. Kidman's Becca has another way...to meet up with the young boy who ran over her son. The scenes with Teller and Kidman are by far the best in the movie. They form a strange friendship which is built by grief and guilt for what happened and is one of the most moving scene's you'll see all year. All the cast are brilliant in this film. They play David Lindsay's script perfectly. The film is never dishonest, it never tries to gloss over the reality of a couple who have lost a child and is all the better for it. Don't let the content of the story put you off. Kidman puts in another great performance with Eckhart also proving that he is one of the most underrated actors around.
