In 2009 J.J Abrams did the unthinkable, he made Star Trek cool. Yes that's right, your Dad's Star Trek has been brought back for the new generation with a new cast and a new story, showing us how the legendary characters all came to work on the Starship Enterprise. The film follows Kirk (Chris Pine) who has become a bit of a problem child after his Dad (Chris Hemsworth) dies saving his life on the Starship Kelvin. Kirk is asked to join up with Star fleet by captain Pike as he believes it's Kirk's destiny. Kirk agrees and joins the academy where he meets Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the team.
At the time Chris Pine was a relatively unknown actor, he was probably best known for starring in films like Smokin Ace's and Just My luck with Lindsay Lohan. It's no surprise that when Chris was announced as the new Captain Kirk there was a bit of a uproar online from the Trekkers. I have to say I think he plays the role well, giving a spirited and likable performance. Generally all the cast do well with Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and John Cho giving good performances, but the best definitely comes from Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban who both nail their roles as Spock and Bones. Most of the original cast from the 60's TV show came to visit the actors during filming and offer some support and guidance, fortunately Zachary was able to learn from the master as Leonard Nimoy was the only actor brought back to reprise his role from the original films. The film is very much like it's young cast, fun, exciting and sexy with writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman producing a script that has plenty of humour and action. The high concept action scenes are great, giving off real tension and suspense. The final act however is a slight let down purely because its comes and go's far to quickly, but for anyone who had to endure the long winded stories of the Matrix films will find this film as a perfect alternative to fill their Sci-Fi needs.
Kudos has to go to J.J Abrams and his crew for pulling this off. They have made a Star Trek film for the new generation, which was a tough ask considering most of them would rather sit and play on their iPhone instead of watching a Sci-Fi movie that started it's life in the 60's. There's enough here to bring in new fans as well as keep the the old Trekkers happy. This film also broke the 'odd number' curse (any odd number sequel to Star Trek was considered rubbish). With Abrams officially announcing that his next film after Super 8 would be a sequel to Star Trek it'll be great to see all the cast return and establish their roles as iconic characters even more then they have here. Star Trek is a triumph and the most exciting film of the series to date. Another classic franchise has been re-born.
